Motorola Milestone XT720

The Design
The otherwise fairly standard smartphone look of the Motorola Milestone XT720 is elevated by the slight kink on its right-hand side. This lends the design its distinctive nature and also serves a more practical purpose – it ensures the phone feels more like a camera when you’re holding it on its side and taking a photo.
So from a short glance, you can tell the XT710 concentrates more firmly on the media elements of a phone than the original Milestone does. And compared to its predecessor, the Motorola Milestone XT720 is slim at just 10.9mm – the same slenderness at the Samsung Wave and making it one of the thinnest Androids on the market currently.
The capacitive screen measures 3.7 inches and comes with touch-sensitive navigation keys, support for multi-touch input, and a proximity sensor for automatic turn-off. The screen is the same as the first Milestone but the XT720 is thinner because it comes without the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. This phone is perfect for you if you enjoy touchscreen smartphones with all the technology and features but none of the additional weight of housing a physical keyboard – although, actually, the lack of a keyboard only reduces the weight by 5g to 160g but the extra features compensate for this easily.
Motorola Milestone XT720 Specifications
Like the latest Acer device, the Acer Stream, the Motorola Milestone XT720 runs on the Android 2.1 platform. This OS can be upgraded to the 2.2 version upon its release, so the Motorola Milestone XT720 will support Flash 10.1 in time. Meanwhile, there are ample features for enjoying visual attributes. These include an incredible 8-megapixel camera with Xenon flash, a first for an Android. Combine this with a 10x zoom, and you should be able to take professional-standard images on your phone – which is a fantastic addition to a smartphone, almost placing it level with the 12-megapixel camera on the Nokia N8.
And the video captures HD-quality images so both still and live images will be high quality. The internal memory can be increased to up to 32GB, which may be needed to house all your movies and photos – not to mention music and any other apps you may want to download from the Android Market.
Browsing is another highlight on the Motorola Milestone XT720, and the phone has capacity to support up to 8 open browser windows. This means the phone is good for social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, as well as using for work purposes, as you can have several websites open at once. The multiple email accounts also let you stay on track with your work and home life, checking both simultaneously.
Considerations
Motorola’s MotoBlur interface, which made its debut on the Dext, is not included on the XT720 so if you’re a fan of social networking you may be a bit disappointed.
Verdict
With an excellent video and camera onboard, an HDMI connector for linking the phone to your TV, and multiple features and apps, the Motorola Milestone XT720 is a tempting device.

Nokia 6303i Classic

In a word or two
The Nokia 6303i Classic is a compact mobile phone with an even more compact price.

The Design
The Nokia 6303i Classic is a tweaked version of the popular Nokia 6303 Classic. The phone has some internal upgrades and comes in two extra case colours – white on silver and khaki on gold – but the “i” version is the same size and weight (a mere 96g) as the original. This means the 6303i is pocket-friendly, with a traditional Nokia look.

Candybar in shape, the Nokia 6303i Classic has is an attractive layout which appeals to both the eye and the fingers thanks to the spacing of each key. The 2.2 inch screen displays a good resolution and supports 16 million colours – which is particularly good given the greater social networking integration of this Nokia.

Nokia 6303i Classic Specifications
Communication is straightforward on the Nokia 6303i Classic. The phone packs a number of options into its slim case including Bluetooth and Ovi Services. You can download applications onto your phone via the Ovi Store as well as quickly share your snaps using the Ovi Share function. And with a 3.2-megapixel camera onboard, you will probably want to share your images with friends. The camera has autofocus, 4x digital zoom and a dual LED flash. With a video option, you can happily capture still and live footage on your travels, and although the quality is not the finest it is sufficient to certainly enjoy this feature.

Another good tweak of the Nokia 6303i Classic is its ability to support instant messaging. As well as chatting via social networking sites, you can engage in real-time conversations online – and there are the usual communication options on top like email, and text and multimedia messages.

The battery life has also been enhanced compared to the original 6303. The Nokia 6303i Classic has an incredible 515 hours standby time, which makes a refreshing change to the likes of the iPhone and Google Nexus One smartphones which seem to devour batteries in a matter of hours. With the Nokia 6303i Classic, you can go away for the weekend and not panic if you forget your phone charger. This battery is also great when it comes to enjoying your music as it supports up to 30 hours of music playback from a single charge. You can choose to listen to your own playlists or tune into your preferred FM radio station, and listen via the 3.5mm audio connector or through the phone’s internal speakers.

Considerations
The Nokia 6303i Classic is a 2G mobile with no support for 3G or Wi-Fi.

Nokia 5220

Introduction
The relatively new Nokia 5220 is one of the Xpress Music phones from Nokia which offers a good set of features including a very good music player and a 3.5mm head phone jack. The phone has a great look to it as well and is very easy to use. It’s essentially a cheap phone which offers a good set of features and the added bonus of being a dedicated music phone. There is a dedicated audio chip inside the phone which helps music quality through headphones. So far, we’ve not seen much wrong with this phone at all and would highly recommend it to personal users who enjoy music.

Specifications

The Nokia 5220 is a music phone so as you’ve probably guessed it is equipped with a great media player so you can listen to music whenever you feel like it. The phone has about 30 MB of internal memory which isn’t very much for music (about 5 songs) but it can be expanded up to 2GB which is enough for about 500 songs so it’s definitely worth getting a memory card for this phone. The phone also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack which is very helpful because it means you can plug in your own headset and listen to music whenever you please.

The Nokia 5220 also has a 2 mega pixel camera which comes in handy for snapping a few shots here and there. The camera has a 4 x digital zoom and is relatively good considering the price range this phone is in. The camera can also record video clips which is handy although the quality isn’t excellent so if you need something better than average you should look elsewhere. The phone has a lot of features for a device in this price range and is also equipped with FM radio with RDS which means you can tune into your favorite radio station when you’re out and about.

The phone also has a good organizer with a calendar and memos. You can also use the voice memo and built in hands free as and when you need it. There is also a good battery on board this phone which lasts up to 24 hours for music playback. The phone’s standby time and talk time is 406 hours and 5 hours respectively which is pretty good for a phone of this style. All in all, the features of this phone are good and we’d definitely recommend it to basic personal users who enjoy music features.

Looks
The Nokia 5220 has a rather funky design on the exterior which is asymmetrically designed to make it easy and comfortable to hold. However, it is a bit odd so it might not be everyone’s cup of tea so beware of this. However, practically it is a very good handset and appears to have a good range of usability. The handset itself is available in three colours; blue, red and green and we always like a handset that is available in more than one colour because it gives users a chance to be unique. The phone measures in at about 108mm by 43.5mm by 10.5mm so isn’t huge by any means and is actually quite slim line in design.

The phone weighs about 78 grams which is very light for a music phone and we think this is great because it’s lightweight, slim line and stylish. In our opinion, the phone has a nice and stylish design to it and is probably going to be very popular with personal users because it’s funky and stylish and is definitely a personal phone in terms of its design, look and feel. However, it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea because it is an odd shape – some people will find it to be cool, others will find it to be odd.

Design
In terms of design, the Nokia 5220 has good software and the user interface and operating system appear to run smoothly together. There have been some comments about the phone randomly switching itself off during calls but this doesn’t appear to be a widespread problem. Overall, the design of the software is good and seems to match the internal applications and features well. It appears to be easy to use and most of the applications run quickly and you should be able to use this phone easily and perform tasks quickly and with little or no trouble at all.

Overall
All in all, the Nokia 5220 is a good looking phone and although it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea it’ll probably be very popular because it’s different. The features inside the phone are very good and the design of the exterior is also good in terms of usability. The phone’s camera and video recording facilities may not be the best but they offer an easy and fast way to snap a few shots and are both perfect for basic personal users. We’d definitely recommend this phone to personal users who enjoy music features because the phone has a dedicated set of features just for enjoyment of music.

Also, the Nokia 5220 has a nice look to it and is very stylish inside and out and as it is only £130 on PAYG and free on contract you can probably get a pretty good deal on this phone which will make it all the more popular. For a mid range phone it certainly has a good amount of features which will make personal users very excited and we think it’s a great phone that is definitely worth the purchase. It has all you could need as well as being in a stylish handset which is different and unique.

Overall, the Nokia 5220 is definitely a phone we’d recommend to personal users and it seems to have a nice set of high quality features which make it a very popular handset to own. The only downside is the problem with the phone shutting off randomly but as this doesn’t appear to be a widespread problem we think it’s safe to say that it’s a good phone with good features and will probably make a lot of people very happy to own. All in all, the Nokia 5220 is yet another good phone from Nokia.

Nokia 6303 Classic

Nokia released the brand new Nokia 6303 Classic, which is the clear successor to the Nokia 6300 and the Nokia 6300i. The Nokia 6303 supports tri – band and has Nokia Maps pre-installed so that you can make use of the GPS navigation facilities. The looks are as modest as that of its predecessor, so let’s see what the new Nokia 6303 Classic has in store for us.

- Works on all 2G networks
- Weighs in at 96 grams and has a thickness of only 11.7 mm
- TFT screen is 2.2 inches long and is able to display a vibrant 16M colours. The screen has a resolution of 240x320 pixels
- 3.5 mm headset jack
- MP3 ringtones
- Phonebook can stores upto 2000 contacts and has support for PhotoID
- Call records can store upto 20 received, 20 dialed and 20 missed calls
- Internal memory of 64 MB which can be expanded upto 4 GB via the microSD memory card slot. A 1GB memory card is included in the retail package
- Class 32 GPRS and EDGE connectivity
- Bluetooth v2.0 for connecting and sharing data with other phones
- microUSB port for fast data transfer between the computer and the phone
- 3.15 megapixel camera with the ability to capture pictures with a maximum resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. LED flash is also present
- Video recording is done at VGA quality @ 15 frames per second
- Messaging options include MMS 1.3, SMS, IM and Email
- WAP 2.0 browser
- Stereo FM radio with support for RDS
- Colour schemes include Steel and Matt Black
- Java MIDP 2.0 platform
- Flash Lite 3
- Nokia Maps
- Music player supports MP3, eAAC and AAC songs
- Voice Memo
- Maximum standby time of upto 450 hours and maximum talk time of upto 7 hours

The nokia 6303 Classic borrows the modest looks from its predecessor, but slightly improves on that, mainly with the black colour scheme. The keypad is backlighted in light blue and all the alphanumeric keys are separate from each other, meaning its easy to identify which key is which without having to look at the phone itself. This makes it easy for texting fast. The screen and the other keys (i.e. the call keys, the navi keys and the 5 way directional key) are all raised above the alphanumeric keys. The volume rocker is situated on the right of the phone, while the switch on / switch off key is located at the top. The speaker, camera and the flash are located one beside each other on the back, just like it was on the Nokia 6300 and the Nokia 6300i. The 3.5 mm headset jack, the microUSB port and the charger port are all located at the bottom of the phone.

The Nokia 6303 Classic is a worthy successor to the highly popular Nokia 6300. How Nokia manage to get those 6300 lovers to give their phone away for this one will be highly interesting, but the specs sheet, along with the good looks, should surely tempt a lot of people and should give the likes of the MotoROKR E8 a good run for their money.

Nokia 5530 Xpress Music

Overall

A fantastic update to the 5800, Nokia´s flagship music device. The 5530 has been trimmed of certain features and specs Nokia has deemed inessential, and the result is a slimmer, better looking and less clunky phone we think is an absolute winner.

Look and Design

Thanks to the jettisoning of certain features and a slight reduction in screen size (although the quality has been upped, increasing the brightness and sharpness), the whole packge is substantially smaller and thinner than the 5800. It´s also been given a material overhaul, losing the slightly too-plasticky look and feel of the previous handset.

The newly redesigned homescreen and contacts bar also add to the increase in slickness, with the drag-to-scroll carousel feature especially impressive

Conclusion
If you love using your phone to carry around and listen to your music, there´s probably no better choice out there for you. The 5530 is a fantastic update to an already great product. And did we mention that it´s launching at a far lower price than the 5800 did? Well, we just did! So go grab yourself a bargain.

Motorola Defy

There have been many phones released that cater to outdoorsy-type people, offering a rugged sturdiness that protect against drops, bashes and contact with large volumes of water. Devices such as the Sonim XP3 Sentinel or the Samsung E2370 have been designed to withstand all manner of tribulations that nature may throw at the hiker, rock climber or general adventurous phone user.

Catering for a niche market these phones have usually been quite noticeably lacking in other areas, providing only very basic features to enjoy. Many a rambler has lied awake at night contemplating whether or not to get a rugged, but archaic, handset, or whether to opt for a more feature rich device and risk destroying by accidentally dropping it off a cliff.

Now Motorola has solved this problem once and for all by offering up a rugged phone which has all of the desirable features of the most up to date handsets on the market. This phone does not feature a 1" monochrome display, but a full 3.7" capacitive touchscreen complete with Android 2.1. The Android OS is overlaid with Motorola´s Motoblur, which is the same interface to be found on many other Motorola phones of late, such as the Motorola DEXT.

The interface comes complete with access to Android Market and has full web browsing functionality thanks to the Android browser and 3G and Wi-Fi support. The phone also boasts a 5 megapixel camera, LED flash and features such as geo-tagging and video capture.

Other features include full messaging an email support, including threaded SMS messages and support for instant messaging. There is support for Google Maps, YouTube and quick and easy access to your favourite social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. For web browsing people will be pleased to hear that the Defy comes with full Adobe Flash 10.1 support.

The Defy features a rubbery case which will protect it against all sorts of knocks and jolts, and can be held under water for 10 minutes without any trouble ensuing. It may not be quite as rugged as some of the more basic rugged phones on the market, but this is pretty much the payoff for enjoying the latest features such as a touchscreen and heavy multimedia features.

Nokia 6700

The Design
Luxuriously lavish, the Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition dazzles and impresses your eyes – as you’d expect, considering the phone is plated in 18-carat gold. Underneath the impressive surface is the original 6700 Classic phone which is popular thanks to its appealing design and range of features. Incredibly, this limited edition mobile is the same size and weight as the original.

The Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition is available in a choice of two platings. You can opt for the sublime, fully-plated gold edition or the moderately tranquil gold with silver framing the screen and covering the top part of the phone’s back.

This very special edition from Nokia follows on from another golden mobile phone – the Nokia 8800 Gold Arte. Along with the body and interior of the 6700 Classic phone, the Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition comes with golden wallpaper, a leather case and strap, and an 8GB memory card.

Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition Specifications
Once you move beyond the alluring exterior of the Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition and calm down, you can begin to enjoy the features of the phone beneath. The 2.2 inch screen, which supports 16.7 million colours, displays photos and messages vividly and comes with a light sensor and brightness control so you can appreciate the screen even when it’s sunny – just be careful the gold plating does not dazzle you too much!

While friends and family admire your Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition, you can photograph the occasion using the inbuilt 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. The camera lets you take some quality images and the camera key should help ensure you never miss another photo opportunity. You can then share your photos online, via email, Bluetooth or multimedia messaging – or transfer the images to your PC using the USB connectivity.

The Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition phone is naturally one to carry with you at all times and the integrated GPS receiver and Nokia Maps ensure you won’t get lost. You can easily plan your journey and find the quickest way of reaching your destination. A 30-day navigation licence is included for Nokia Maps.

As you would expect from a quality mobile phone, the Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition comes with a music player and FM radio. There is noise-reduction technology inbuilt also for your added aural enjoyment.

Considerations
The Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition is obviously not cheap and considering the price, it is a little disappointing that the size of the screen is on the small side.

Verdict
If luxury and beauty rank highly when it comes to selecting your mobile phone, you are sure to love the Nokia 6700 Classic Gold Edition – in all its dazzling glory.

Motorola DEXT

The Design
The Motorola DEXT phone has a black exterior with a silver strip around its curved edges. It is solid and fairly chunky, similar in design to the LG GW520. It has good reason to be relatively thick as it has a slide out QWERTY keyboard inbuilt for added typing ease.

The touchscreen measures an impressive 3.1 inches and takes up the majority of the phone’s front with just three buttons beneath it for the menu, home and back options.

Motorola DEXT Specifications
The Motorola DEXT is run of the Android platform and is the first of its kind with a full QWERTY slide out keyboard since the T-Mobile G1 phone. It is a great feature, especially if you use your phone a lot for emails and messaging as the slide out keyboard is neat and the keys are large enough for comfortable typing. The on-screen keyboard is also responsive and can be flipped to landscape to make typing easier. Its features are user-friendly too and include pop-up letters to confirm a press – just like on the iPhone 3G S – predictive suggestions as you type, and a press and hold function for selecting symbols and numbers.

If you are keen on social networking, the Motorola DEXT phone is ideal. It uses Motoblur which syncs all your networking contacts into one, easy to manage contacts list. All your friends’ details on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace will be downloaded onto your home screen and their actions will be streamed, making for effortless interaction. Updates and messages, texts and emails, will all be communicated to you in the one place without the need to log in to the different services or open applications. And if this ever becomes overwhelming, you can filter the display screen to show only one stream.

Other great features include protection of all your data. With the Motorola DEXT, you can back up your messages and accounts online. There is even the option to wipe your details remotely if you ever lose your phone, and you can then simply get all your data back on your new phone from the Motorola server.

Being an Android smartphone, the Motorola DEXT comes with access to the Android Market. Similar to the App Store on the iPhone 3G S, the Android Market allows you to customise your mobile, as you can download a wide range of games and applications – many of which are free.

Considerations
The design of the Motorola DEXT mobile is not the prettiest – it is sturdy rather than sleek. However, it is an ideal phone if you want an Android smartphone which is built for mobile communication as it comes with Motoblur for easy management of your social networking sites, email, instant messaging and a 5 megapixel camera for taking photos and sharing them with contacts.

Verdict
With its customisable home screen, Motoblur interface, Android platform technology, and user-friendly keyboards and features, the Motorola DEXT phone offers a fun and clever way to stay in contact with your world.

Samsung W960 – The world’s first 3D display mobile phone

You like to watch movies on 3D? Everybody does. Most of the movies like fast and the furious, Spiderman and now Avatar become huge hits not only because their story and graphics were cool but because the 3D versions of the movie were a great success. Samsung eyeing this opportunity has decided to launch a mobile phone with 3D display. This will be the fist mobile phone having a 3D display.
If you think that you need glasses to get the 3D view from this mobile phone then you are wrong. You don’t need them. It’s just that you have to place the phone at a certain level and at a certain angle to enjoy the 3D image. Samsung has named this new phone as W960 3D AMLOED. It is a CDMA smart phone with AMOLED display with 3.2 inch capacitive WQVGA resolution (240×400 pixels). It has a 3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus and video recorder functions. Just like other cell phones it has a micro SD card slot, blue tooth and DMB-T TV Tuner.
The 3D display could be easily turned on and off as the phone has an option to do so. It will really be something amazing to use. You can watch movies and you can play 3D games on a mobile phone. Samsung can attract a lot of people through this new technology in its mobile phones but unfortunately this cell phone will only be marketed in South Korea and it is not yet decided when it will come into the international market.
The only rumored drawback in W960 3D AMOLED is that it does not support WiFi. No doubt it is a feature which people really need in a mobile phone and it may pull people away from buying this mobile phone especially those who use WiFi service the most. But still people would be waiting for its arrival in the international market as it is something new for them just like iPhone was once.

First Impression:
The Samsung Corby design is chic and glossy and seemingly caters to a young market that cheers on feature phones.

The Experience:
The phone comes with colorful fashion jackets. However, the colours are not as glaringly solid as those of the Corby TXT. The front of the phone has a minimalistic design, often appearing to be bare – with only three keys to work with. The widgets make it easy to access social networking services like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. The camera and video quality are good, with a passable resolution and frame-rate. Unfortunately, the call quality is not up to the mark, there is little voice clarity. Messaging is made possible through a virtual keypad, which is easy to use and responds well to taps. However, considering it is completely touchscreen, navigating throuth various UI elements can be exhausting. On the plus side, the UI is mostly consistent and touchscreen gestures are intuitive, which means the user will not be frustrated by its lack of a physical keypad.

The Verdict:
Considering it is a mid-budget phone, the Samsung Corby, is a reasonable deal. It is unfortunate that such a visually appealing phone suffers in the area, which is most important – the call quality. Nonetheless it is a good-looking phone with a lot of features in an affordable price.

Nokia 3720 Classic

The Nokia 3720 Classic is one tough cookie! Whether you drop it in the swimming pool or kick it like a rugby ball, it will endure rough handling with ease. This mobile phone has an international protections rating of 54, which denotes a high degree of protection and resistance against dust and water. Moreover, it has a 2.2-inch thin film transistor (TFT) display screen with 16 million colors and 240x320 pixels of display resolution. The phone has 20 megabytes of built-in memory and supports a microSD memory card of up to 8 GB. Connectivity options include GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth and USB. It supports a 2-megapixel camera and users can easily share images via Bluetooth, e-mail, MMS or Ovi Share – Nokia’s media-sharing web service. Apart from the camera, other multimedia options include a video recorder, music player and FM radio. Most importantly, its lithium-ion battery when fully charged offers a talk-time of seven hours and standby time of 408 hours. Its power-efficiency, together with and LED torch and the pre-installed Nokia map application, makes the Nokia 3720 a mobile phone fit for outdoor adventures. The Nokia 3720 Classic can be purchased at a price of approx. 25000 PKR.
